Question Windows Media Audio 9.1 Lossless?? Yes or No??

Is it deemed acceptable to use Windows Media Audio 9.1 Lossless for torrents posted up here??

I would use FLAC, but I hate Winamp, all my media is on WMP, and I cant be bothered to do anything about it, so can i use Windows Media Audio 9.1 Lossless, as far as I can see, there shouldnt be a problem (cept people have an aversion to Windows), it does also use VBR and suppots Tagging and playlist files.

Can I do it??

Re: Windows Media Audio 9.1 Lossless?? Yes or No??

if this thread goes on for pages with ppl asking us to allow windows media lossless we will consider it

personally, I cringe at the thought of allowing ms lossless (or apple lossless for that matter)

for now its SHN/FLAC/APE (preferrably FLAC)

try out foobar2000 ... get the special installer, choose full installation.

Say, has any more consideration been given to WavPack? It seems like it meets all the criteria.

last I remember we were waiting for full support from shntool followed (of course) by xact and tlh.

wavpack is on the horizon...

Ah, that's right. It's been a year and a half since shntool was updated. Do we know if a new release is approaching?

I don't think that it would be a good idea because of cross platform support. I know APE has a bit of the same problem but I think it's ok to allow it because it's quite widespread. I have uploaded som APE torrents in the past but I have decided not to do it anymore.

You can still play FLAC with WMP if you get Ogg codecs for windows but I don't think it supports metadata that well.

Another alternative would be the CoreFLAC DirectShow-based decoder. Dunno about metadata, but honestly, basically you get what you ask for by using WiMP

"Friends don't let friends use WMA Lossless."

Re: Windows Media Audio 9.1 Lossless?? Yes or No??

Isn't it all just a matter of compressing something using MS lossless (cringe), decoding back to .wav, and then using EAC's compare wave feature to make sure it matches back up to the original file ?

Re: Windows Media Audio 9.1 Lossless?? Yes or No??

that's one way, or you could generate st5 from the original wav, encode to ms lossless, then decode to wav in a temp folder and generate another st5 from that and compare, then delete the temp folder. pain in the ass when all is said & done.

On Windows, maybe. On other platforms?

Software support for WMA lossless by interesting players and tools is very limited, and the format itself offers no real benefit except for being usable with MS' turd of a player. No speed gains, no compression gains, no nothing.

I can't imagine why anyone should have to put up with this ... format just because someone else can't be arsed to check out decent formats (and software).

Hey nobody said I actually like WMP or WMP lossless. That's 180 degrees away from my personal opinion. I'm a Winamp user as a matter of fact.

About the platforms, I have no idea, as I only have Windows XP SP2.
