testing loseless files

in the faq for this page it mentions testing loseless files to see if they were sourced from lossy formats. Exactly how does one go about that in a Linux/BSD environment?

Re: testing loseless files

Use Audacity.

Set the preferences up correctly (Off the top of my head)
EDIT>PREFERENCES>SPECTROGRAMS (Set to 24000Hz).
Some people find the display easier to read if the greyscale option is used.

Check out this forum for more information/examples/help.
