Total newb here...

So I've been downloading audio from shows for years, but now I'm trying to get more into video because well, video just rules! And I have a big Ipod now.

I'm most interested in show vids, d'uh, that's what brought me here.

So can I expect a long download on most of these vids? On the order of a couple of days?

I've had a Phish torrent rolling for awhile now.. nothing to serious just a one setter. If they take this long, then they take this long!

Thanks for any of your time, I'm sure this newb 101 stuff to most of you.

Re: Total newb here...

what kind of connection do you have?

DSL or Cable?

Did the provider provide you with a set of general bandwidth limitations for your plan?

With DSL you can expect someting like 768 down / 768 up, cable could be 3000 down / 512 up, etc.

What did they tell you about yours?

Re: Total newb here...

seems like once I opened another torrent, the original I had open picked up a bit.

I take it that when you have a torrent open, you're uploading the whole time so that can increase dL speeds, and I'm guessing I should I leave a completed file torrent open for some time to help uploading... is that considered seeding?

Most bittorrent clients will reward those that are sharing more (uploading) by allowing them to get more (downloading). It's kinda weird, but if you increase your upload speed, very often your download speed will increase. This isn't always the case, because there are so many factors that go into your upload and download speeds. And yes, keep that torrent file 'open' to keep seeding the show and increase your share ratio.

get ready for your IT person to come snooping around your machine eventually, once he figures out who's maxing out his T1(s)

Re: Total newb here...

^word, good to know. I'll stay away from copyrighted material so maybe that will buy me some time.

so the files that came from the vid I grabbed make no sense to me.

IFO? VOB? BUP?

any easy way to convert these things?

Re: Total newb here...

OMG, Lorely Germany 97 Phish NOW PLAYING through my DVD player on my comp!!!

You folks that get to tax this kind of action are SO LUCKY!! SEEING is SO much better then just hearing!

Ok, sorry. But wow, the quality on this is insane! I've had the audio for this show for around a decade...!

Any ideas on a decent computer program to convert the DVD files to an Ipod format?

I think I'll be burning to DVD mostly, but it would be nice to have this action on the Pod.

Thanks folks!

Re: Total newb here...

hey james, no notices from IT...... YET!

I was actually wondering about that, I mean I used to download audio via bitorrent all the time and no one said anything. Isn't this essentially the same thing?

I hope so!

Thanks for the support folks.

Re: Total newb here...

here's a complicated but free way to convert DVD to iPod.
http://www.tagworld.com/ssj2_goha/Po...5-28d6f26e67a8

here's a more simple conversion.
http://www.sheerboredom.net/modules....article&sid=65

3 more here.
http://www.videohelp.com/guides?form...VD%20to%20iPod

It's not a simple one click process but with a little patience, you can cram the iPod full of videos.

I use 3GP converter for converting videos that are already in DivX and mpeg/mpg format that I've downloaded off bands websites or other *cough* places. 3GP is almost drag and drop (after getting the settings set up where you like it), so it's a great way to move all them favorite official band vids to the iPod. Here's the link:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/3GP_Converter

Good luck and hopefully I didn't overload you with information.

Re: Total newb here...

Something is not right for me with these dvd to Ipod programs.

I'm on a Mac, and "Codewarrior" opens when I attempt to install these programs. I can see them within Codewarrior, but I get an error when I attempt to open them from there.

Any thoughts? Maybe I'll go for the "drag and drop" program talked about above...

(gotta big up the Jerry/Grisman vid I grabbed today! this stuff is amazing!)

Re: Total newb here...

Once you mentioned Macintosh, you can count me out. Unless you want to try them within a virtual machine running Windoze.

I did a batch job last night before bed time with the 3GP converter. Woke up to a bunch of new tunes ready for the iPod.

Re: Total newb here...

hmm. you'd think it would be easier to convert videos to IPOD format on a MAC then a PC, but what do I know.

ok, I'll have to bitch one of our pc's and see if it will help me.

thanks again!
