USB Drivers in Windows XP .... Im f**ked

Right, here's the history of this bloody mess.....

My PC Is a Dell Dimension 2350
OS : Windows XP Home Edition , Version 2002 , Service Pack 2

My PC doesn't recognise any Plug N Play USB Devices. I initially had the problem with an external HD - but eventually got that resolved by placing the original XP CD into the PC and doing a search on the disc for driver.cab , copied that folder from the CD into a folder in the C drive called i386 and then reinstalled the HD manually by pointing the New Hardware Wizard to i386 to search for the compatable driver.

Then I had the same problem with a 1GB Flash Drive - The PC gives me littles beeps noise , so it's recognising "something" has been plugged it ... then when I go to My Computer - it's not there , so I do "Device Manager" and it shows listed as "Flash Drive" with a big yellow "?" and says No Driver - blah blah.

So I asked for some advice on another forum ... and was told to do this :

1. Plug the drive in and wait for it to go through the hardware not recognized steps. Keep it plugged in.
2. Click Start -> Run
3. Type regedit and click OK
4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\USB
5. You will have to search through all the sub-folders here, looking for the name of your flash drive.
6. When you find it, make note of the flash drive name and delete the first folder where you find the name of the drive. The whole folder.
7. Do a search through the registry editor for other references to the drive and delete the rest of them.
8. Remove the drive from the USB port, reboot, and try to plug the drive in again after the system reboots.

This fixes about 90% of such problems.

Did that and now my WD External HD has disappeared too ... nothing plugged into a USB port is showing as recognised if it's Plug N Play !!! aarrgghhh

And Im no longer getting the beep noises when I plug in a Plug N Play device .... so it's actually worse than before !!

Help - please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How many USB ports do you have?
And which ones are powered?
Have you tried unistalling your USB ports and rebooting to reinstall them?
Is there a dust bunny in your USB port?
Have you updated the USB drivers?
Is it USB 1.1 or 2.0?
Did you check Windows help data base?
Are the USB ports motherboard or add-in card based?
Have you cleaned the inside of your PC?

Just going over the things I'd do in this situation. Your motherboard may be going bad or the add-in card may be loose.

___sometimes___ this appears because the drive letters (partition, usb etc.) are disabled (usually a - z are enabled but who knows), you can check this with a free tool called "Tweak UI". Beside that try to format in NTFS (usb stick too) rename them and make sure e v e r y usb disk/stick will get a "personal" drive letter. Start with Z, than Y ... because every installed Item/partition will get a letter from (a/b) c, d, e f, ..... automatically.

If the letter your external usb disk wants is not available it ends up in a problem like this. just an idea, not sure this will help

I forgot about the drive letter thing. That's easily corrected. Good catch lehnhard.

agree on the 'drive letter assignment'
most USB devices want to be the 'F drive'
- if you're on a networked system - it will not show if a previous volume has been allocated as F.

quickest fix I've found is:

Start> Control Panel > Administrative Tools

Select: Computer Management > Disk Management

your USB device(s) will be in the list.

RIGHT Click > select: Change Drive Letter & Paths

Change USB device to an unused drive letter.

*problem* - IF the drive is removed and system is rebooted - you must repeat the process.

**warning** make sure you are changing the USB device - or you could possibly re-assign your hard drives..etc.

well, have to disagree. don't get me wrong, your help is appreciated.

Drive letter F may not be available in most windows pcs with two harddisks (with two partitions each) plus a dvd drive will let you start not before drive letter H .
If you say yes, H for my USB harddrive is fine, OK but next time you (or whoever) insert a usb stick or add a usb printer may get the same problem because windows is stupid, no E T. I. for sure!
For that it usually works fine to go the way you told us but to start with a drive letter (for usb harddisks, sticks etc.) from the end = Z, Y, X ...., that allows windows to continue with the alphabetic order for other added devices.

hope you understand what I'm talking about (can't do it better)

have a nice day

hello lehnhard.
yes, I must agree that Z, Y & X are indeed excellent drive letters.
they are some of my favorite letters !! I think the letter X is cool.

but I wasnt speaking of any of that.
the comment concerned the issue that USB memory sticks (thumbdrives..whatever) want drive F.
They just do. It must be their favorite letter!!
BUT, if its used it - the drive/device wont mount.
This makes me sad why cant we all get along!

may the seed of your loin be fruitful in the belly of your woman!!
