Md (hi-sp) or mp3?

Hi,

Another one from me. Picked up a couple of unknown gen cdrs recently, audience recordings onto a Sony MZ-N10. Now, I know these were quite likely recorded in Hi-SP mode (ie. lossy), but what threw me is the CDs have mini-gaps and bad transitions, so wanted to check if these come from mp3.

So does the 16KHz cut off indicate mp3, or do the higher frequencies shown in the spectra show otherwise?

Thanks,

James

Re: Md (hi-sp) or mp3?

So the second one has a slightly lower cut-off of frequency, both have the same source info (and presumably the same taper.)

SP-CMC-8 > SP battery box w/ roll-off > Sony MZ-N10

The Sony MZ-N10 records using ATRAC DSP Type-S and only has a line out. The pics you have posted look exactly like what the lineage advertises it is, with no mp3 encoding done.

Here's some examples:
http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...ead.php?t=8003

Also, we don't have anything for Type-S in that thread, if at all possible could you upload a 20 second sample or just a short track from this show to rapidshare.com or similar? thx in advance!

ps also, did he tell what soundcard+software was used for the transfer?

Ok, thanks for that! So I recieved both as unknown CDRs, rather than from the taper. Clip comes from the Cooper Temple Clause, playing in the QMU in Glasgow 11/18/03.

Clip - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=EMU3IZ3Y

All the info I have -

SP-CMC-8 > SP battery box w/ roll-off > Sony MZ-N10 > ? > CDR(?) > EAC > CDR(?) (my copy) > EAC > WAV > FLAC

The CD has SBE's, so probably was burned straight onto disc after the transfer to the PC.

Also, I have a Sony MZ-RH910 Hi-MD, and have some recordings in Hi-SP. Presumably it uses the same codecs, I couldn't see any info, but it's one of the more recent Hi-MDs. Let me know if you want any clips or samples from that, for comparison or whatever else you need.

Cheers,
J

Re: Md (hi-sp) or mp3?

you're welcome and thanks!

I have a Sony MZ-NH1 Hi-MD which has many settings as well, when I find the time I might need your help finding any other variations of ATRAC we haven't covered, and appreciate your offer & might message you about this for help when I get there. Your help is appreciated

If you have Hi-MD, wtf would you use ATRAC and not PCM-WAV (lossless .wav)?

Re: Md (hi-sp) or mp3?

I asked pretty much the same question before over here:
http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...ad.php?t=32282

apparantly some Hi-MD decks don't age well and begin generating very bad errors when recording in LPCM WAV, and the taper doesn't have the time/money to buy a new recorder before the show.

that or else a) by accident or b) to fit the entire show on one disc to avoid the hassle of changing discs & having to turn off autogain and/or being spotted doing this (not as good reasons!).

I prefer analog cassette over ATRAC for sound quality, but we all work with what we have and are able to get past security if it has to be stealth. At one point I was recording on an ATRAC-only MD deck and the improvement in sound using the same mics on my new Hi-MD was incredible. I hope that all tapers who are using ATRAC make the upgrade, but as I said before, we all work with what we have and can afford.

Re: Md (hi-sp) or mp3?

Same as above.

1.) Ignorance
2.) Stealth. You can record up to 7.5 hours on HiSP. Just hit it and run. Super stealthy, very convenient for when you're on the rails at Tool and the security leans on your shoulders.
3.) Convenience, ie. if you don't really care about the crap support band,, don't want to change discs etc.
4.) Battery life for very long concerts/festivals. See 2.) HiSp drains the batteries less, you'll only get around 3hrs or so on PCM.

That said, I usually try and record in PCM, but I've a few recorded in HiSP.
