Re: New lossles audio codec - TAK -

I don't see it being used as a standard until the source is opened up and it is made easily portable between oses. The amount of compression achieved is promising but not enough to overcome the above to be widely accepted.

Re: New lossles audio codec - TAK -

looks interesting, but i gotta agree regarding cross-platform compatibility...no matter how good a codec it might be, if its only gonna be available to windows users, the trading community will never switch...on top of that, i'm not sure a 2 or 3% increase in compression ratio would catch my attention really, its not that big of a jump

i would try it out anyways just to give it a shot, but i don't run a windows machine...let us know if you ever decide to support the Mac OS

Re: New lossles audio codec - TAK -

Yep. Look at mkw - most trackers banned it because of non-cross-platform availability. Apple's lossless also had problems for the same reason - you had to use iTunes and not everyone wanted to install it. And, as Aaron stated, the compressions difference is not that great.

Here is an idea of how tak stands against other lossless codecs including the newest flac release.

I say it should be banned as well if it isn't already.

My 2c: nothing bits Monkey's Audio, and pity that it's not considered as a codec standard.

yet again, the developers only offer Windows support

i'm pretty sure there is a patch now available for decoding, but unless the actual developers start supporting all OS's, i don't really see a codec becoming the "standard"

The source code is open so any developer can port it if they so choose. It just seems nobody has bothered to do so yet. I think the real issue here is the amount of resources it takes for playback that will ultimately drive the developers to any particular opensource compression scheme. I'm no developer but my understanding is flac has the lowest requirements and that is why you see the most amount of hardware support for flac while you all other lossless codecs pretty much have zilch for hardware support.

For those monkey audio supporters who can actually code here is the link to the sdk for developers.

Re: New lossles audio codec - TAK -

remember when we did this at STG? lol

FLAC decompresses very quickly on the fly, so it can be supported on portables. APE compresses significantly better but I've never seen a portable support it (does anybody know one?)... I heard the power necessary to decompress APE files on the fly would eat batteries like never seen before. Plus there's some issues for Mac and Linux users... where is sarah when we need her? What is the status of cross-os support for Monkey's Audio? It works great on my PC, I always use it to archive when I'm doing mutitrack music recording.

edit: I wrote this before I saw weedy's post

Re: New lossles audio codec - TAK -

Meh.... F this codec unless it improves. It takes too long to enc / dec for the slight improvement in size. HD space is cheap... getting a standard like FLAC accepted was not.

FLAC is supported in portable players now! (not that many, but hopefully we'll see it one day in the major ones)... I think the thing to do is give options for more compression in FLAC since it's already out there.
