If you don't know the generation, should you forget torrenting it?

Just so you know, that's EVERY Police show. They have not kept track of lineage over the years.

Who is "they?" The Police?

Same with Rush and Yes. "They" never seem to include proper lineage, ever.

Re: If you don't know the generation, should you forget torrenting it?

We recognize the fact that older bands don't have this stuff. So, I wrote this up on a show we pulled recently:

I just wanted to clear up a couple of things....

First off, if a Silver CD of this show exists, we just like to know that you did your homework and that a Silver CD > EAC > wav > etc lineage of this show doesn't also exist. We want to know that this is, in fact, the known circulating show.

As far as the CDR part, we like to know if you know the generation. If so, we would like to know it also. So, CDR(1), CDR(3), etc, or if simply unknown, then we like CDR(x).

If this is not extracted from the originals, then we need to know that you have listened to the show and that it is 'digitally clean' and you know it is lossless and gapless. (I've even seen some users attach an image showing the Spectral Analysis of a 2 second part of a track).

I know these rules sound picky, but we really are trying to make sure that the shows that are circulating on this site are indeed worthwhile downloads for the users. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to PM myself or any of the other Mods.

The whole thing about seeding CDR(x) is written about in the FAQ and it says it's pretty iffy. Don't try to do it with a show taped this year or last year, or..... it will be pulled. That part was written about *older* shows.

No...but you need to put down everything thing that you DO know...if it's from CDR, then you'll know that it's CDRx (x meaning unknown gen) > EAC (or other error-correcting ripper) > lossless format.

You also must know the original source, SBD/AUD/STU whatever. You can put together a good lineage from that.

We also want a note knowing that you've check the show and that it is complete, gapless, lossless, and doesn't have any digital static anywhere on it.

We just want people to give the extra effort to check for these things, include the most they can about the lineage, and double check their recordings before seeding. I'm sure we can work with you to get most of the seeds you want to make up here! And we're always willing to help!

Re: If you don't know the generation, should you forget torrenting it?

Look I appreciate the help and all but do realize I'm not a newbie either. I seeded about 30 some shows at least on STG before it went down. This year I was fortunate enough to get some ins on Van Halen shows with known, low generations and stuff. The thing is, I put stuff up on STG like The Police Tokyo 2/15/80 which was well-received. But, as with 99.9% of Police shows, the "trading community" which expired in 1996 didn't keep track of any lineage. If you look at any Police list from anyone, the traders never, ever have what generation the show is.

So basically, if I were to continue to seed Police shows, all I could really give is something like this:

AUD>unknown gen cass>CDR(?)>EAC(secure/offset)>WAV>FLAC(level 5)

All I'm saying is that I hope I won't be shut out from seeding Police shows or even VH shows for that matter (though as I said, I do have known lineages on about half of those thanks to a couple of awesome hookups that I got lucky enough to find). Because what you have to realize is that with Police and VH, there really isn't another alternative. Like if I put up an obscure Police show like Milwaukee 11/8/79, there's likely no "better" one out there and certainly no better one that someone else has and is willing to share.

Re: If you don't know the generation, should you forget torrenting it?

Lou,
What you have there is fine. We are looking for people who done their homework and are able to ensure that what is being seeded is as good anything that circulates. You've got the generations there, and unknown is ok if you just tell us that. By your comments, I'm quite confident that you know what you're talking about, and you're the kind of person we're trying to get to seed.

The best thing you can do is write the lineages, as you have above, and include a short note the effect of your above comments.

Re: If you don't know the generation, should you forget torrenting it?

Well if you want, you can take a look at my tradelist, particularly the VH and Police portions:

http://www.geocities.com/loucap81/police.html
http://www.geocities.com/loucap81/vanhalen.html

All my shows are hyperlinked to text files except ones that are also on vhboots.com (a couple of which I contributed but didn't feel like using my own text file)

So basically, what I have in the text files I made up is what I'd be putting on here, except I'd add in the EAC(secure/offset)>WAV>FLAC(level 5). Almost all of my CDR's would be CDRx.

Okay, so you're saying that you're positive that all these shows you're talking about were extracted from CDR(x) using EAC? How many of these do you have EAC .log files for?

No, I'm saying if I were to torrent them, I'd extract them from my CDR's with EAC and convert to .flac.

Re: If you don't know the generation, should you forget torrenting it?

Okay, I understand now... These are all audio cdrs on your list.

So, 1st thing to consider is that cdr(x) is not allowed if there is a silver cd (pressed) is available somewhere out there. So don't choose any of the ones sourced from bootlegs unless you have the original silver cd to extract from. This way only exact copies of the original bootlegs are "liberated".

Also, I'd highly recommend using FLAC compression level 8!
