HD Video - Audience Help needed, Sony .mts to lossless audio.

Hi guys

I need some advice with sony .mts video files. I am trying to extract lossless audio files from .mts files.
What is the correct way to do this? I can transcode the .mts files to 48000hz 16 bit stereo flac, is this lossless?
Or should i transfer the .mts files into wav and then flac?

Any advice would be a great help, im a amatuer but i want to get it done correctly.

Thanks.

Re: Help needed, Sony .mts to lossless audio.

There's a converter HERE

Haven't found anything that says whether or not the audio within this AVCHD format is lossless or not..... just this;

"High-definition MPEG Transport Stream video format, commonly called "AVCHD;" used by Sony, Panasonic, and other HD camcorders; based on the MPEG-2 transport stream and supports 720p and 1080i HD video formats.

AVCHD stands for "Advanced Video Codec High Definition;" the format was jointly established by both Panasonic and Sony in 2006."

Anyone else?

Sorry, I think I misread your post - if you CAN get them directly to flac, then flac itself is lossless, and I don't see a need to go to wav then flac - but it's unclear to me whether or not the audio in the .mts is lossless to start with.....

Re: Help needed, Sony .mts to lossless audio.

The audio part of AVCHD formatted media (.mts files) is either Dolby Digital (AC-3) or Linear PCM. The first is a lossy compression scheme, the latter uncompressed audio, i.e. audio in linear PCM is lossless if a lossless source was used.

Note that a conversion to flac format does not alter the audio data in any way, so you cannot get lossless audio from a lossy source by converting it to flac.

Thanks for your help GRC and roann.

The files are
Streams
Video: 00:16:17.520, 25.000 fps interlaced, 1920x1080x12, AVC
Audio 1: 00:16:17.520, 48,000 Hz, 5.1 Surround (stereo downmix), Dolby AC-3
Audio 2: 00:16:17.520, 48,000 Hz, 5.1 Surround, Dolby AC-3

So, to make this ready for a trade i just need to encode it to flac? And it will always be lossy because it came from AC-3?

Just out of curiosity, would a Flac upload of this concert be allowed here?

Thanks again.

No, this upload would not be allowed here. I am pretty sure it wouldn't be allowed on Dime either.
