How wide should you make your web page/frames?

What is the good width for a web page so everyone can view it nicely without scrolling left and right?

And if you make a fixed left frame, what height should it be?

sorry for the basic questions! i bet some of you guys know this right off the top of your head.

Re: How wide should you make your web page/frames?

Thanks for the advice. The page I'm working on is the link in my sig. If you have any suggestions, blast away, I can take it.

I would like to have a navigation bar at the side of the page since the page is very long (tapelist). Right now there is a little bar at the top. I also used tables for the text to keep it penned in and centered, they are 800 pixels wide in violation of TVAP's suggestion. I'm sure there's a better way to do all this but I'm not really sure what I'm doing.

Teach me why frames suck if you have a moment.

Re: How wide should you make your web page/frames?

What I meant was something smaller than 800x600 because 800 x 600 is still used by some people as their monitor resolution because you said a width for a webpage so everyone can see it.

But personally I just prefer to design them at around 1000 x 740

I hear ya. I appreciate the answer. I probably should have asked that question before I made all those wacky-ass tables.

The most common browser width at the moment is 1024*768.

That's a great read, Motion. Especially what irritates people, when visiting a site. Very useful, thanks !

I know there's something on www.useit.com about progress bars, but I just can't find it right now.
