normalizing recordings vs maximizing volume

i didnt see a thread on this. sorry if its out there!

i'd like to know what some of you think about normalizng recordings vs maximizing the volume. most of the people ive asked state its better to go with maximizing the volume. however, sometimes its sounds like normalizing the recordings make them better and vice versa. id like some other opinions ff you dont mind.

im presently using a sony hi-md mz-m10 bass rolloff batterybox and sound pro bcm 12 mics. thanks for your help
