Re: is this MiniDisc?

feel free to start threads like this. the topic of the signature characteristics of MD needs much more discussion.

Going by the SA this certainly resembles MD so far as I can tell. This would be a digital transfer (as evidenced by the almost pure black showing in the higher frequencies). I would love to see a couple more 2-second screencaps like this one from other parts of the show.

There's three quality settings for MD recording, and they have slightly different cutoffs.

When I get a chance I'll dig up some known MD sources I have at home and perhaps we can get to the bottom of this.

Re: is this MiniDisc?

really low levels on this recording.

If you'd like to send me a 5 or 10 second sample of this, I'd love to give a listen as well. drop me a pm.

If anybody else has opinions on this, please post away.

Re: is this MiniDisc?

Why anyone would record to MD using this narrow a bandwidth doesn't make sense to me. A 12khz brickwall is just insane.

Also, I think you see a more natural falloff in the frequency response from MD, not anything like the brickwall you see in MP3.

Okay, I got an 8-second sample of this from spontabmark. Here's what it looks like zoomed in to 2 seconds SA, zoomed out to 8 seconds SA, and FA by Audacity:

Re: is this MiniDisc?

After speding some time with this, I've got to agree with wazoo2u. Upon closer examination, this doesn't resemble any MD source I've ever seen. It's lower quality and lossy as well.

For comparison purposes, here's some screencaps from known MD sources.

Re: is this MiniDisc?

The Bush show I made screencaps from was recorded in the highest quality setting possible for MD. I wish everyone would record in this mode!

please do bring on the MD screenshots.

Re: is this MiniDisc?

the pics you just posted look much more like minidisc than the ones in the 1st post... there is much more frequency response in the highs, as would be expected. Also, there's that certain "shape" to the lego when zoomed to 2 seconds.
