Question How do you sort out your collections?

Good evening everyone! (at least here in Sweden)

I'm in the middle of sorting out all my Van Morrison shows. Is there a quicker way to rename the folders than manually doing it one by one?

Also, when I'm done renaming all the folders/shows I would want to export all my folders into a excel sheet in chronological order. Is this possible? I really don't want to copy paste all the name of the folders one by one into a excel sheet if there's quicker ways to do it. Would appreciate help!

Re: How do you sort out your collections?

There's a free downloadable called filelist that I've used, which will give you a txt file list of folder contents

If you have renamed the folders to start with YYYY-MM-DD, that will automatically put them in chrono order in the list. But Excel can sort them for you anyway, once they're in the sheet.

I don't see any way of renaming them other than one-by-one, but what I would do is take the whole folder as it is now, make a filelist.txt of it, edit that txt file so that each line, still in the same order as the folder, is edited to the format you want, then copy/paste each line in sequence to the sub-folder names.

Really appreciate your answer and thanks for the useful tips. I just searched for the app "filelist" and I got results of many different apps, is it this you're talking about?

Re: How do you sort out your collections?

Don't even think about cut & pasting all those folder names individually. You can use a "lister" like Cathy Folder Lister. It's so lightweight it doesn't even install like a normal program. You just create a shortcut to the exe file and fire it up that way It will do external drives, even optical media. No limits on HD's/ no limits on anything. As you change things, Cathy that HD again.

You can grab the 3 files you need here.
http://www.gizard.org/goother/Progra...ter/Cathy2313/

Place those 3 files in her own folder so you get all her directories.

Yeah, I was thinking about doing it for a while but I knew there must be a software that can do it for me. So a big thanks to you, I'm not home atm but I'll try the app you recommended. Thank you so much!!!

Here's what I do to make a .txt file of a folder's contents:

How To Print The Contents Of A Folder In Windows 7, 8, and 8.1

--Using Windows Explorer , Open the Folder whose contents you want to print as a list
--Hold down the Shift key and Right-click on any blank space in the folder, and select Open Command Window Here from the Right-Click Menu
--Open Command Window Here
--In the command prompt that pops up, type in the following command

dir > List.txt

This will automatically create a text file named List.txt inside the target folder
--Open the List.txt file to view a complete list of files and folders, that you can easily print out

For Cathy Folder Lister...
Be sure to Place those 3 files in her own folder so you get all her directories.

Download found here:
Cathy Folder Lister

An amazing little tool that can help you easily track down where you may have a file or folder. Once the media has been cataloged, it does not need to be connected to your computer for it to show up in a search. If you want to open the file location using Cathy, the media does have to be connected to your computer.

Once Cathy is opened, there are going to be 3 tabs.

Search, Directory & Catalog

http://i61.tinypic.com/4sjjop.jpg

Start with the Catalog Tab.
1. Click tab to access
2. Browse for folder
3. Select folder to add
4. Add

http://i62.tinypic.com/wt8zno.jpg

Click on the Search Tab.

In this image I have my Grateful Dead 1967 folder opened, and have 2 examples of searches.

First Example:
http://i58.tinypic.com/sxc7zp.jpg

I entered in the date I wanted to search in the "Pattern" box of the search tab. 4 different results popped up, the first 4 results are folder names. There are a few different columns here. I have found the most important to be "Name" & "Volume." It really helps me out to have my HDDs with their own unique names. You can see the 4 folders are all found on different volumes. The "Grateful Dead" Volume is my daily access. The "CharlieMiller" volume is the drive I received from Charlie. The "GD_BDR_01" is my Grateful Dead Blu-ray Disc 1, and the "GD 1965-1972" is my back up drive. Any volumes that you have added during the catalog phase with the corresponding search pattern will be displayed here. In addition to the folder names you can also see the .md5 .txt and any other file types which match the pattern searched for.

Second Example:
http://i61.tinypic.com/3020sae.jpg

This image I am searching for the shnid. 9108 is the shnid entered into the pattern box. Here you can see that any file name that has the number 9108 will show up.

If you want to open the file/folder location using Cathy, make sure that the media is connected to your computer. Highlight the entry you want to open & right click. A menu will pop up and there are several different selections you can make here.

More features in Cathy...

Right click a file/folder name:
A few more options which can be helpful can be found when you highlight the file/folder name and right click.

"Open" as long as the media is connected to your computer at the time you click open, it will open the file/folder location.

"Directory Tree List" exports the location of the file/folder to a text file.

"Full List" exports all folders AND files found in those folders to a text file.

"Create Playlist (m3u)" exports a m3u playlist to a location of your choice

It appears that this works in Windows 10. The difference is that instead of OpenCommand Window here one gets Open PowerShell Window here
