acceptable formats for surround sound

I need some clarification on what file formats are acceptable for surround sound audio. I may be doing some decoding of some matrixed live broadcasts in the upcoming months, and at present only have the ability to generate DTS-CD files. Just uploaded my first project to the Genesis movement site, and while they were cool with the cd format, it does seem to be a little bit of a grey area.
Also, regarding acceptable sources of these projects, are extractions of lossy sources acceptable? I figured not, however, there is a certain website that streams old live tapes which has a significant amount of matrixed sources online, and doesn't seem to have any interest in offering them in their intended form. Some test extractions sound much better than expected. I'll leave it at that. If that's something you don't want to get in, I understand.
Thanks, CP

Re: acceptable formats for surround sound

we don't allow lossy sources here in our ABT forum, sorry

as for surround sound formats, there are tons of them...here's a quick list:
http://www.crutchfield.com/Learn/lea...und_chart.html

the most common you see in trading circles [usually DVDs] are usually encoded to AC3 or DTS...that said, if yer interested in creating lossless audio surround mixes, you'll need to stick with either Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio...but remember that yer sources have to be lossless as well

Ok, then it looks like DTS-CD files are acceptable, yes? Sorry, your answer was a little vague and it's late. Completely understand about not wanting to deal with lossy sources.
I figure that was the case.

I always found it kinda funny how everything has to be lossless through all the lineage, and then your aloud to encode it in lossy AC3. I understand why and everything, I just find it funny.
