need help to remaster...tips please!!

I am a complete stranger to audio remaster so i am here asking for help.

I recently got a cd in a trade and the sound needs a serious remaster...
The source is FM but the quality is a serious problem...i am guessing this is from a ANA tape (i don`t know the exact source YET) so it has some hiss. the main problem i think is the volume...it seems to have been recorded too loud and it has poor definition.
So i wanted to clear out the instruments sounds, the vocals, remove the hiss and whatever is possible to improve this...It was a great show and i wanted to have a decent copy .

Here is a sample and some images. Any feedback would be great.
Thanks!

Do you know the full lineage for this recording?

It sounds and looks like distortion was introduced at some point (recording or transfer?) and then at another point it was normalized or the dynamics have been messed with. So it looks to be already "remastered".

I agree with Dumbluck - this sounds as if it has already been worked with somehow. FM can be patchy anyway, it reeally depends where it was picked up, how, and what the frequency details are from the broadcaster. It might be worth your while looking for a pre-FM tape. In my experience, if you start working with FM you quickly lose what is there. The only thing you might be able to do is add some depth. Killing the hiss will probably take a lot of the higher dynamics with it. But it doesn't do any harm to experiment!

Re: need help to remaster...tips please!!

That is lossy with tons of extraction errors. Did it come from LeifH12345? He just posted five shows, which all got pulled with this lineage: xxx > Smart recorder> WMA> CDR> FLAC

I downloaded the TYA show he put up and it has all the same characteristics, except it is an audience recording and is mono. He needs some help figuring it all out, he wants to share but needs a lot of help to get it right. There is no need to burn to cdr and encode to WMA, if you could just get a copy of the files before he did all that, it could be okay. There is also SBEs, 2-second gaps, huge dc offset problem and also no txt or ffp included with the show I checked out. Try to get him to post in this forum (maybe right here in this thread) for help, we all had troubles when we were starting out. It seems that he might know analog a lot better than digital and FLAC.

The state this version of the show is in, there is not much you can do except adjust the volume & eq on your stereo and seek out a better copy.

Re: need help to remaster...tips please!!

i am probably late, but only got the complete source today:

FM -> Sony CMT - EP303 -> Mini-Jack -> Sony MZ-N1 -> Wave (with All Sound Recorder XP) -> Splitted in tracks (With CD Wave Editor) -> CD-R (Burning with Nero Burning Rom at 4x) -> EAC -> Wave

Maybe the the FM signal was poor or something...i will try to improve this a bit but i can see that i won`t be able to do much.
Thanks

^hmmm... it records "what you hear", not directly from the soundcard.
