FM compression or .mp3 ?

I'm usually pretty good at spotting .mp3 sourced material, even in the rare case when it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb, but I always love second opinions. The attached is from FM, but what do you think?

Re: FM compression or .mp3 ?

Spike at 17 KHz ? Halfway between TV and FM ? There's a spikelet at 15.5 KHz so I'm going for a TV source.

Re: FM compression or .mp3 ?

OK, thank you, but the disks have FM intros and outros so I know it's FM.

I'm just trying to make sure it's not .mp3 sourced, because I need it for an upcoming project.

The recording is Dire Straits - live in Houston from August 17th, 1985.

Although, who knows, could be one of those TV simulcasts without video, but I don't think so.

Re: FM compression or .mp3 ?

the problem with ALOT of US radio stations today is that they take live programs that are sent to them on disc for broadcast then load them in their machines as Mp3's and broadcast them that way, could be an Mp3 source that was broadcast over the airwaves...

Re: FM compression or .mp3 ?

Yes, I know, but not from 1985.
Unless there is something I should know about

To be honest, I wish there were more live concert broadcasts. It seems that they are thing of the past these days.

Come to think of it, I haven't heard any in a long time.

Re: FM compression or .mp3 ?

Here is the screenshot you needed Five. Hope I did that correctly.

The show is from a radio station out of Canada(?) called "SHAY 106", but considering it was broadcast in 1986, I doubt it still exists. The show was called "Saturday's at Seven".

Thanks.

Thanks.

Re: FM compression or .mp3 ?

the sample doesn't resemble the screenshots posted above

very low levels, tons of noise... can't see the carrier

anyhow it looks & sounds lossless to me

Re: FM compression or .mp3 ?

The sample was from Sultans of Swing.
The freq analysis and spectral views above are from a differnet song on the same recording.

I didn't think it mattered as it's all from the same source.

Well yea, I agree, the levels are very low. But I didn't do the mastering on this one.

Re: FM compression or .mp3 ?

No, they all have equal hiss levels, from what I've seen and heard.
