Strange computer sound problem

So my sound randomly turned off tonight. I tried restarting, checked all my settings, tried different programs, ran through the windows troubleshooting, but there doesn't seem to be a good reason why.

It happened when I opened up desktop properties to change a background, if that helps.

Hmmm stupid question but did you stop to think it might be your speakers & not your computer?

For example, plug a known working pair of headphones directly into the sound card. Do you have sound?
