Problems with DVD playback

Hi everyone.

Lately I've been running into problems with my video downloads that I've subsequently burned to DVD. I always test the VIDEO_TS on my Mac before burning to ensure it plays properly, then burn to DVD and test the disc (again with the Mac) before trashing the original files. Here's where things go wrong. I put the newly burned disc in my home DVD player and get "NO DISC" or "DISC ERROR: REPLACE DISC" messages. I have two players (a multi-region one for PAL and one for NTSC) and get similar results with both. I never had this problem in the past and now it's happening 9 out of 10 times.

Can anyone offer any advice, short of buying a new DVD player?

Thank you.

Re: Problems with DVD playback

are you closing the disc after burning it? some programs allow you to burn but leave the disc "open" so other files can be added later. standalone DVD players don't like that but computers can still access the contents.

Re: Problems with DVD playback

As far as I know, I don't have the option to leave the session open or to close it. I'm running Mac OSX with Toast Titanium 8, if that means anything to anyone. ?????

Are you using a brand of media that you have had success with in the past?...or have you recently switched to a new brand of media?

Also, how long have you had this burner for and approximately how many discs have you burned?

I recently switched from a TDK external burner (which I burned hundreds of discs on) to a Samsung Super-WriteMaster, but had problems with discs on the TDK also. The media I've been using has been Verbatim, Memorex and Fuji. Some of the Verbatim discs worked fine, but most have the same issue in the home player. I've had success with all of these brands in the past, which is why I have stuck with them. It's very strange.

Its closing the session ok then. But intermitant.
That says burner fault to me ,not Standalone as you have 2 SA's saying similar.
I'd dump the Samsung back to shop & get one with not such a hyped up comic book like name..lol.
Did it have arrows either side of the name on the box.
Da da-da daaaaaaa
The
->Super-Write Master<-
Ruler of the outside lavatory (& that little gravely patch by the shed)

hahahahahaha

No seriously chap ,sounds burner fault. You may just of got the bad one from the batch. The one where the solder wasnt so strong on a connection or something trivial.Go back & swap it over.
I would say look for a firmware update for it,but you may turn it into a brick and won't be able to take it back at all then.

K_K

(They might have a Sooper-Dooper Write Master of All Masters Platinum XXX edtion )

I use a crayon btw

Re: Problems with DVD playback

I agree the name is a bit over the top!

Problem is that I'm on an older Mac and my choices for external accessories are very limited. What I ended up with is the only option that was available at my local Mac-only store. I also believe I got the last one they had. I searched all sorts of different shops for something similar, that would be Mac compatible, before finding this one.

The firmware is current.

Maybe I should try to reinstall Toast?

Re: Problems with DVD playback

You might want to try burning via another method on your Mac. Look here under "If you have a VIDEO_TS folder and want to burn it with freeware" and give it a try - http://u2lynne.sandsmuseum.com/burning.html#anchor11. You basically just make an iso and then burn that using Disc Utility. See if you can play a disc made using that method.
