No question is a dumb question!

You can open the checksums in any text editor and then compare the "letters and numbers" (the checksum). They should be exactly the same if the video was copied correctly. The only exception is the checksum for the menus - VIDEO_TS.bup, VIDEO_TS.ifo, VIDEO_TS.vob. Sometimes the software will 'correct' the menu and so the checksums won't match. But, all the VTS_0x_x files should have *exactly* the same checksum if the video was copied correctly.
I've never run a chucksum on a disc before, but a few times on TS folders of shows I seeded here, and the process took a couple of minutes at most.
I'm doing one of the discs now and it took 20 mns to verify just one VOB file, but it showed no errors.

Re: GSpot says: Parameter Incorrect

I don't want to risk playing them on my standalone.

Even if I could play them, I cannot copy them, so I cannot trade them.

The trader is replacing them, has tested the new ones, and they can be copied he said, I'm just trying to figure out what happened so it doesn't happen to me in the future.

I tried dragging and dropping the video folder to my desktop as "wolf" suggested, I got the same parameter error.

So I'm still

You are verifying a vob from your DVD? And where did you get the checksum to verify it against? Or do you mean it took 20 mins to create a checksum from one of the vobs on your DVD?

It took close to 30 minutes to create checksums for the DVD that I could not rip to my drive. Usually it takes a couple of minutes to create them for VOB files I seed.

md5summer says no errors occurred, so I am at a loss.

Well, what you need to do now is compare the checksums you created to the checksums the person who made the DVDs creates for the DVD he has. If you run your own checksum on your own DVD, then you should not get any errors. You need to get a copy of the checksums from the original person.

Re: GSpot says: Parameter Incorrect

Yeah, major problem. The vob files should be *exactly* the same if the DVD is copied correctly. (This is why we want the checksums in the first post of the thread - people can immediately see if their copy was done correctly if they received it in a trade.) Also, all bup files should be exactly the same as the corresponding ifo file of the same name (bup is simply a backup of the ifo, an exact copy) and you can see that even that is not so with the second set of ifo/bup files.

The same:
0c95ed4709bda1bcf17b82f6267700a3 *VIDEO_TS.BUP
0c95ed4709bda1bcf17b82f6267700a3 *VIDEO_TS.IFO
df9e02bc21c5e960e13086d2db699f5c *VTS_01_0.IFO
9594f596fecdf7c8968abe0a5a80b3a2 *VTS_01_0.VOB
0c2fe78e5b3ac64032b903969085416a *VTS_01_1.VOB

Not the same:
d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e *VTS_01_0.BUP
133fb80f8383a0ba2129fc9aef0ee6f4 *VTS_01_2.VOB
d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e *VTS_01_3.VOB
d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e *VTS_01_4.VOB
d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e *VTS_01_5.VOB

i've never seen separate vob's spit out matching checksums like above...obviously there's either an issue with his system, backups, or burning process...i would ask for detalis as to how he copied these shows for you, and you'll probly want to ask for new discs once you know he/she's copying in the proper manner

I asked him to compare his master disc to the new one he burned for me, but he had already sent it out, so I will have to wait until it arrives and then compare it to the checksums of his master.

If they turn out to be identical, then the problem would appear to be a freaky bad burn. If they turn out to be different, then what? His master is not corrupt, he sent it to othes and it worked fine for them.

If this had happened to only one disc, I would easily say "freaky bad burn". But it happened with four of five discs.

I'm thinking it's one of three possibilities:
burning software glitch
dying burner
dying dvd drive

I'm sorry, but that just caused me to spew some coffee. Thanks for the laugh!

So, what you have shown is that the checksum of an empty file is the same as the checksum of the last four vobs on the DVD the OP has. Thanks for doing the test and providing the info! I would never have thought to do that test.

I don't know, it needs to be investigated.

When he ran md5summer it took him more than 20 minutes, which is very long for a disc that doesn't have errors.

It took me less than three minutes to make checksums of TS folders on my drive, about 30 minutes to make checksums of the disc he sent me that I cannot copy. No errors showed on it, but it's not identical to his master disc.

Hope it's just a burning glitch that won't happen again.

Check Disc Quality (at 8x) and eventually Scan Disc with http://www.cdspeed2000.com I expect it won't finish the test as you have file access problem but at least you will see how the disc was burnt. Post screenshot of the quality scan.
