Burning help?

hi, what speed gives best results when burning DVD SL + DVD DL discs also burning them into DVD Video discs or DVD data discs please?

i usually buy either 8x or 16x TYs, burn at 4x [for DVD5s]...for DL, the slowest rate possible...

but almost more important than speed is having a good quality burner, and keeping the firmware updated
