lossy-sourced or not?

Hey all,

I got this show from a hub and the spectral looks a bit suspicious to me. But since the dropoff in frequency occurs relatively high and is not very sharp, I can't conclude with certainty that this is mp3-sourced.
Unfortunately, there was no info file that came with the songs, so I know absolutely nothing about the equipment used to tape this show.
Since it's a one-man-with-a-guitar concert, a friend of mine thinks it might have been recorded with the volume a bit too low, but I'd like to have your opinion as well.
Let me know if you need a close-up of some particular section.

Thanks for your help !

Re: lossy-sourced or not?

From what I can see so far this totally looks lossy-sourced.

Try going here:

you can find links to some other software that might let us see better. I recommend Cool Edit Pro 2.1 for SA and Audacity for FA.

Re: lossy-sourced or not?

Those are the results I obtained with Cool Edit Pro and Audacity. I used 2048 for the frequency plot, I hope that's enough.

Re: lossy-sourced or not?

it looks totally lossy to me.

one more thing, it would be cool to see SA in CEP zoomed in on 2 seconds.

Re: lossy-sourced or not?

Yeah, you can see little black rectangles and of course the flat top. One more question, what year is this show from?

Re: lossy-sourced or not?

I think this is MiniDisc.

I'm curious what ssamadhi97 thinks...

Re: lossy-sourced or not?

I'm trying to find out more about the equipment used to tape this show. It's most probably a minidisc.
Could there have been a conversion to mp3 as well or is it just the loss due to minidisc compression?

Thanks again for your help, it's much appreciated !

Re: lossy-sourced or not?

well the spectrum is pretty much shot (lots of black holes :P) but it still goes up to 17kHz, something you don't really see with mp3 or usual md sp compression.

I'm thinking it might be md lp, but I'd have to compare to other md lp sources which I can't find on my harddisk right now.

Either way, the source is "very lossy", definitely not normal md compression I'd say.
