Converting 48k wav files to FLAC

I just recorded my first 48k show, and now that I've downsampled and prepared to seed it I would like to archive the 48k files. I tried to flac them with flac frontend, but it wouldn't do it. I then tried dbpoweramp but canceled it because I'm not that impressed with that program except for making lossy for my player. What program should I use?

I searched the site for info, but couldn't find anything.

Thanks!

Re: Converting 48k wav files to FLAC

Flac Frontend should be able to handle 48k wave files just fine. What settings did you use? What error messages, if any, did you get?

Turn off sector alignment, which is useless for anything but 16/44.1 files. You'd think that with 48k files flac.exe would just ignore sector alignment, but maybe not.

That sounds like the problem. If you pass the "--sector-align" option to flac.exe with anything apart from 16/44.1 files, then flac.exe will naturally quit with an error message.

The easiest way is just to go to the command-line and use flac.exe directly. e.g.

flac -8 *.wav

Dave.

Looks like that did the trick. Thanks so much for the assistance. The 44.1 version is up now if you want to check it out.

Re: Converting 48k wav files to FLAC

to archive the 48khz just leave it as wav and burn it as data on a cdr or dvd...since the 48khz wav is your recording master you should save it that way, dont encode to flac....

Sorry but that makes no sense.

I was under the impression that flac is a better archival format than wave. Are you saying that if burned as a data disc instead of an audio disc that the files would be just as stable?

Re: Converting 48k wav files to FLAC

The files would be MORE stable if burned as a data disc. You should never use the audio CD format for archving.

But there is no good reason not to use FLAC as your archive format. Perhaps jcrabb is worried about the extremely remote possibility that if your files exist only as flacs, someday you won't be able to decompress them back to wave. That is so unlikely that I wouldn't bother worrying about it.
