Re: 16:9 Widescreen Conversion

If the DVD was recorded as 4:3 then NO, because conversion will be lossy.

Re: 16:9 Widescreen Conversion

I think it would require re-encoding to change 4:3 to 16:9. This would be a lossy process and not welcome here. I don't know of a way to do it without being lossy. Maybe you could outline your methods of transfer and I'll let you know. But if you know enough about video to convert it you should know if it's a lossy path or not.

Re: 16:9 Widescreen Conversion

Yeh I added menu's to Cypress Hill Woodstock 1994 downloaded from thetradersden and chaged it to 16:9 in tmpgenc and burnt to DVD..Is this not acceptable in trading community?Dont worry if not I still have the orginal files from the 4:3 version downloaded from here so I can burn again and use my 16:9 version for personal enjoyment, I feel that bootleg DVD's look a lot better in 16:9 widescreen..So can anybody clarify if this is acceptable or not?

Also I recently downloaded this torrent from dime it is a Rage Against The Machine DVD and it was recorded in 1992 and transfered from vhs the aspect ratio on this DVD is 16:9..Here are the full details

If you need exact explanation: IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. Upsizing and re-encoding degrade original video. Many modern TV sets have hardware option to change screen resolution of a video.

Re: 16:9 Widescreen Conversion

Why the hell would you want to watch the video s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d out from a square to a rectangle?

If it was filmed as a square, watch it it as a square! Otherwise the people look like short fat oompaloompas!

Re: 16:9 Widescreen Conversion

you don't have to stretch it out.... you can zoom and crop it to widescreen proportions... but it will be pixellated from the zoom and additionally from the reencode.

Re: 16:9 Widescreen Conversion

or you could just crop it and NOT zoom and it would look as good as the original, just cropped... buy WHY?

is 4:3 so painful to watch that people would rather destroy part or all of the picture just to make it 16:9?

If it wasn't filmed in 16:9 - there is no information for a 16:9 picture.

no, since it was transferred from VHS [which was probly 4:3], transferred & cropped to 16:9 in editing, and then encoded to DVD...

the re-encoding they're referring to is when you take a DVD thats in 4:3 [already encoded, aka compressed], and then cropped to 16:9, and encoded back to DVD...that is where the double encoding/compression occurs, which leads to a degradation in quality

doesn't make much of a difference as far as I am concerned. why would anyone CROP an image and loose image information???

'art' should be appreciated the way it was created and not in a butchered and mutilated way. imho the re-encoding issue just adds to it but is not the main evil here.

Re: 16:9 Widescreen Conversion

You can change the AR in Ifo-edit proggy without re-encoding,but then some standalones will not play it & close ups will look oompa if it does as James says.

Video - Audience Re: 16:9 Widescreen Conversion

I have a DVD that was shot as widescreen, but was mistakenly encoded as 4:3.
It's Heaven & Hell Vancouver. Got it off Dime. As you might know, Ronnie James Dio is a short little troll of a guy. In this video he looks seven feet tall!
I tried to use Ifoedit to change to widescreen, and it worked to playback from the HDD and as a DVD burn when played back on my computer, but it's still 4:3 on my cheezy home DVD player (Panasonic VHS/DVD combo) on old school tv...

The menus are properly formatted for 4:3, so I'd want to leave them alone, but change the main video content to 16:9, to make the band normal height, instead of the 8 foot giants they look now with the 16:9 vertical stretch going on.

Can anyone help me out with the ways to properly make this into widescreen?
