MKW Audio Conversion Tool

Why is MKW no longer recomended??

I have Windows 2000 and for some reason I can't seem to get shntool to work to convert SHN files to .Wav and so I use MKW.

Any help in getting me to figure how to convert shn to .wav with shntool using windows 2000 would be very helpful!

Re: MKW Audio Conversion Tool

You probably don't have the shorten helper binary which shntool needs to work with SHN files. Download it here.

On a straight conversion from SHN to WAV shntool just acts as a front end for shorten.exe. That being the case, it's easier to use a program called Multi-frontend to act as your front end for shorten.exe. It also works great with flac.exe.

Alternatively, since you seem to be able to work with a command-line program, i.e. shntool, you can just use shorten.exe from the command-line.

Actually - I just started using that program tonight after checking your signature.

Very cool program and was amazed how fast it was able to decompress shn files to .wav compared to shorten.

I used shorten to decompress disc 1 of Yeeshukel and it took almost 10 minutes to finish and mult-frontend to decompress disc 2 and was done in like a minute.

MKW is no longer recommended because it has not been developed to the point of being a valuable tool. As uhclem pointed out, there are other more robust tools for doing what it does that don't require additional libraries to be installed on your PC. Use Multi-Frontend, the command line, or foobar2000 (what I use) for conversions and you're fine.

Just for the record, which 'shorten' do you mean?

Re: MKW Audio Conversion Tool

I'm still confused because the shorten available at the link you just posted and one that I posted are the same.

Are you really referring to this 'shorten': http://www.softsound.com/wsh23b32.EXE ?

Re: MKW Audio Conversion Tool

I usually use Monkey's Audio Frontend to decompress SHN. Foobar2000 is also excellent, it does pretty much anything except my laundry. Multi-Fronted is also installed on my system, I just hardly open it anymore.

I've been using Foobar for playing flac/shn files natively for ages - I wasn't aware you could use it for conversions - how do you achieve this ?

Thanks.
