Music Categories for torrents??

We have been discussing whether categories would add to the search experience here or if it would distract.

Would preset groups be best to choose from? or user created groups?

The predefined categories that are being tossed around are:

Rock and Roll
Blues
Jazz
Folk
Bluegrass
Classical
Hip Hop
Electronic
Jam Band

What are your thoughts?

Re: Music Categories for torrents

duke ellington said there are two kinds of music...good and bad. If the poster wishes to categorize their post then put it in the title. I have enjoyed the browsing and suggestions from others as a means to find music that is new to me. There are not so many torrents posted each day that it would matter much. The categories over at DaD seem rather worthless and on occasion off the mark.
Leave well enough alone.
that's my two cents

Re: Music Categories for torrents

IMO, I think it could be useful here as long as we don't get out of control like DIME and have 50 different categories. I did vote for user set groups, but either way wouldn't matter, to me, its a good idea.

Re: Music Categories for torrents

Dime does it but I have problems with it. A band like Slayer or NWA are easily categorized but I see bands like AC/DC under heavy metal, rock, arena rock, classical rock et al. It doesn't make category searches easy. As long as you can search for a band by name, that's all we need.

And I agree with you, daddyrayoll, too many categories at DaD have proven worthless.

Re: Music Categories for torrents

IF the new Tags/Categories do not affect the current Search results - then sure.

IF the new Tags/Categories affect the Search results like at DaD - forget it.

Im not slamming DaD. its just a fact and point of reference to the matter.

there are features at this site I still havent explored/realized after 2yrs.

Keep It Simple

Thumbs down Re: Music Categories for torrents??

I once tried to tell and ex-roommate of mine that line about the two types of music : good and bad...

...he cut me off before I could finish:
"... yeah I know there's only two types of music : country AND western..."

what a moron!

Anyway, I think pigeon holing music into sub categories isn't needed. My brain is going blank right now, but there's lots of music that's not so easy to define, and crosses those boundaries of what's rock and what's jazz or whatever...

Hey, I guess some people feel the need to organize into smaller exclusive groups in order to feel stronger...
Since I'm usually left on the outside looking in, I vote no categorizing of torrents.

Re: Music Categories for torrents??

Personally I don't have any use for categories

some bands more than one applies

others just get labelled 'wrong'

are the Eagles country? is RATM hip hop?

Re: Music Categories for torrents??

i had started a thread about this, for a specific jazz forum... i voted for user defined? which i'm not exactly sure is what i wanted, but its close enough. my proposal would be something like user defined/maintained groups. perhaps have special moderators for those groups that have a pretty good knowledge of the group, what fits and what doesnt.

have a list that lists everything posted regardless of group, and also specific forums. these forums would have to be moderated (or have a way to report to mods), so incase ratm makes it into the jazz forum, it could be kicked back out into general population...

i dont think all of the specific groups (rock, hiphop, etc) for everything are necessary, but breakout groups for specific things, jazz, classical, artists currently on tour, perhaps one for jambands (although it seems most of that stuff ends up on etree).

totally disjointed, but i think my .02 are here.

Re: Music Categories for torrents??

Good idea for this thread. I had been under the impression that more people wanted categories around here.

Re: Music Categories for torrents??

Voted NO.

Changed my mind because it would add an extra trollable aspect to torrents. Everyone wants to show their huge musical knowledge, so there will be the usual arguments of "OMG, you labeled this as tytewewa!! and bla-bla-bla".
