Question Is there an mp3 player that plays flac files?

Is there such a thing? An MP3 Player that plays flac? I am probably talking through my A*** but I just wondered if there was such a device........then I wouldn't have to convert to the awful format known as mp3 to listen to quality music from a great site such as this.

Yes, there is. The Cowon IAudio X5 lets you play FLAC files that are compressed in any level. The older version M3 I believe lets you play FLAC files too, but only to a certain compression level, I think.

The RIO Karma does support FLAC files, but its kinda hard to find one now. Plus these "Karma" units have a high number of product returns I think. So be careful.

Re: Is there an mp3 player that plays flac files?

Although I wouldn't buy a Karma because of reliability issues Amazon has refurbished ones for $150 here.

I have an iRiver H140 running Rockbox...plays flac, ogg, wavpack & other formats..playback is gapless!...and there's support for replaygain. It's not for your average user though (requires a bit of work to get it installed & configured).

Although taking the computer out for a jog isn't the most convenient.

Re: Is there an mp3 player that plays flac files?

I have a Karma and have never had any problems with it. It is a great great device, and IMO, still the best on the market. They are getting hard to find, but they are out there. I think that you will find that the device failure is not as bad as you may think. Take a look around at www.riovolution.com to find out more about the Karma (go to the forums).

Thumbs up Re: Is there an mp3 player that plays flac files?

Guys thanks for the replys.

I didn't know if there was a mp3 player that would have played Flac files. They all seem to be Hard Drive Players which seem to be expensive but thanks again for your interest and help in this query

Re: Is there an mp3 player that plays flac files?

You bummed me out with that Amazon link....that's 50 bucks less than I paid for a Rio Karma a couple of months ago!

So far, I haven't had any problems using the Karma to play any FLAC files I have (lots, like the rest of you) and by setting up the tracks in a show in a playlist, I can play back gapless.

Very happy with it.
