Unhappy My speeds are way down

So my DL/UL speeds are way down to a crawl, and my internetr connection in general is not what it used to be. I have a fast connection, but recently its been like dial up speeds. I have a wrieless router as well.

My firewall is disabled,and my ports are forwarded still. Everything checks out fine.

So my question is:Is someone also on my network slowing me down? How do I check? Any other suggestions as to how to troubleshott this problem?

Re: My speeds are way down

Hmm...a wireless router...is your wireless network encrypted? You might have some neighbor(s) stealing your precious bandwidth. Granted, encryption can be broken, but some forms are better than others.

Do you know how to get into your router's setup utility? Check portforward.com if you don't know how to get into the setup utility (it's probably going to be something like http://192.168.1.1 if your router is like the ones I've dealt with). I am going to recommend WPA encryption, since it is supposed to be harder to crack than WEP encryption (although we're only using WEP at my house--I want to switch, but my father objects to it for some dumb reason--should probably switch to WPA while he's still gone ).

Re: My speeds are way down

Also, some ISPs have started choking the standard ports of 6881-6889, so try switching to a new, random one over 50,000.

Oh and Sarah, you put so much extraneous shit in your posts your main point gets totally lost. Consice = good.

Re: My speeds are way down

I know how to get into my routers utility page, I guess I just don't know where to go from there. So if I just make it encrypted it should block most people unless they try to get in (bastards!) I will surf around and try it out.

I use a port above 50000, so I do not think that is teh problem.

Thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

Re: My speeds are way down

Alright I am in the correct spot. Now could someone tell me what to enter, and if I will have to re config my port forwarding /static ip stuff etc.

Wireless Security:? WEP or WPA-PSK
Authentication Type: ? (Open or Shared)
Key Select: ? (Key 1 -4)
Key 1: ? (select bit {64,128, or 256})
Key 2: ? (same as above)
Key 3: ? (Same as above)
Key 4: ? (same as above)
There is also a text box to enter a string above each bit selection drop down box

Re: My speeds are way down

Hmmm, I can't help you with your wireless cuz we went about it a different way. We use MAC Address control on ours. With this method, you need to specify the (unique) MAC Address of every computer allowed to use the router. And if your MAC Address isn't on the list, you are SOL.

Thanks for your .02 Lynne. Does anyone else have any ideas on how to setup my encrypted network?

Re: My speeds are way down

stop all programs that are accessing the internet, then run a speed test and post the results:
http://www.testmy.net/tools/test/d_load.php (choose the express dual test).

which bittorrent client and version number are you using?

try connecting to an open office torrent:
http://borft.student.utwente.nl/~adr...ll.exe.torrent

see what kind of speeds it gives you. it will usually come close to maxing out your connection.

also, your ISP could be employing traffic shaping, use a client that offers protocol encryption (utorrent or azureus):

Re: My speeds are way down

I was able to get my network to be encrypted and secured. Which is good. I can't tell yet if things are back normal. Below is my speed test.

:::.. testmy.net test results ..:::
Download Connection is:: 1539 Kbps about 1.54 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB)
Download Speed is:: 188 kB/s
Upload Connection is:: 527 Kbps about 0.53 Mbps (tested with 1013 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 64 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net (Server 1)
Test Time:: 2006/09/16 - 9:00am
D-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-D0KWNCLY4
U-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-PGLSHJD3Q
User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060909 Firefox/1.5.0.7 [!]

I use Azureus 2.5.0.0

Re: My speeds are way down

It's hard to tell if those are good or not if you don't know what speeds you had before or what speeds your ISP has told you you are supposed to get. For instance, I can get 300 kB/s down, but only 52 kB/s up. So, I look at those and think you've got so-so down speeds but an awesome up speed. (Did you do a speed test prior to encrypting your network? That would tell you if you improved things.)

Re: My speeds are way down

No, I have never done a speed check before. With that said, I did always have great Up speeds. A driver would crash before I capped out in the upload dept. I will check up on my service plan and see what I am supposed to be getting.

Re: My speeds are way down

Everything was running great. Then all of a sudden all my torrents went down to 0. I ran a speed check and got this result
:::.. testmy.net test results ..:::
Download Connection is:: 190 Kbps about 0.19 Mbps (tested with 386 kB)
Download Speed is:: 23 kB/s
Upload Connection is:: 27 Kbps about 0.03 Mbps (tested with 97 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 3 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net (Server 1)
Test Time:: 2006/09/16 - 10:52am
D-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-1UQML7NHY
U-Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-A27UPXZ6W
User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060909 Firefox/1.5.0.7 [!]

So what in the hell would cause that to happen!!!!
