a little help with iTunes

I've loaded about 30 gig of stuff on my iPod. And I've searched the iTunes/iPod forums to no avail. My question is, do I need to have the mp3/wav files in my music folder that itunes defaults to? Most of the stuff I upped to the iPod has been off DVD (data mp3s and shows) and whenever I connect my iPod it locks up iTunes for about 1-2 hours before it gives me an error that 3700+ songs (the ones that aren't on a HDD) are in error. They are still on the iPod, just not on the HDD. It then loads all the new shows I've added to the iTunes library. Should I devote an 80 gig section of HDD to iTunes to fix this or am I just crazy?!? Help!!!!!

I believe that if you have the your ipod set to automatically synch with your iTunes library, you will need to keep the music on the HDD. You can avoid the problem by selecting "Manually manage music and videos" in the summary tab for your ipod, in iTunes. You can then drag and drop files to your iPod as well as delete / remove the data you don't want. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I'll try this and see what happens.

Yep, set it to manually update. Or, I think you can set it to only update some playlists. So, if those songs are not in those playlists, then it will ignore them also.

Re: a little help with iTunes

Well after trying this and a few other things, I'm going with the simple route. Uninstall iTunes and make a nice big folder for iTunes for my music. Everything I've tried ends in crap and perusing the Apple forums has just killed hours and solved nothing. Thanks for the help folks. Excuse me whilst I reboot and start anew.
