First, I admit I only skimmed the 86 pages of Threads...question about DRM...

Quite seriously, I'm not lying, I have a "Fair Use" problem with DRM. I have a set from the 14th annual Warren Hayne's Christmas Jam, feat. Bob Weir and Friends, which has magically been wrapped in a DRM wrapper. Now I can't play it back on any of my components. The overall problem actually began with this set, but after a recent upgrade, several more (read over 100) shows came up with DRM attached. I have all of the show but the Bobby set backed up, and can re-rip them to my HD, but is there a way I can strip DRM off of them, instead of laboriously ripping almost 300 CDs?

thanks for the help

DRM? First things first--what format are the files in? If we don't know what format the files are in, we can't help you.

If these are files you bought from iTunes, this should help you: http://www.hymn-project.org/

Re: First, I admit I only skimmed the 86 pages of Threads...question about DRM...

Well, I hate to admit that they are mp3, but they are. I'm not trading them. That's not the problem though. They are all mp3s which were ripped from cds containing shn, wav, or cda of FREELY traded shows. All aud recordings. But after the upgrade, which included a clean install of XP pro on my C drive, a large number of these files on my H drive (media drive) came up wrapped in DRM, which asks for permission to search the web for a license, then can't find one. Inside winamp, it results in a nice little bomb that freezes my program. At this point, there are around 600 of these bombs in my library. And it seems to be completely random. A lot of my Phish is affected, some Dead, some PGroove, others. Strangely, very few of my purchased (cds from stores, not downloads) music seems to be affected.

It has varied over the course of several years. Primarly winamp, sometimes WMP (I think it is the ones ripped by WMP that are the problem) Are we discussing basically the same things in 3 different threads now? If so, email me at [email protected], and we can use IM to talk directly.

please don't hijack threads in the technobabble

and forbin, around the time that this problem started.. have you used your computer to play any officially released CDs... and if so, did they happen to be from the Sony record label? (... any CDs that when you put them in your computer to play, programs that are on the CD pop up?)

Re: First, I admit I only skimmed the 86 pages of Threads...question about DRM...

the old Sony SCMS they put on consumer DAT decks allowed one copy to be made, but not a copy of the copy... sorry I'm not much more help, but it sounds like a similar thing here.

however, the WAV audio you should be able to strip of any DRM stuff by encoding to FLAC, which automatically strips any and all non-canonical header data during compression. then you can re-extract to WAV or whatever.
