Bit Torrent/Norton AntiVirus alert problem

I've recently downloaded a Bit Torrent update, and now I get a Norton AntiVirus Security Alert that I did not get before. Basically it says that Norton has detected a worm trying to access my computer and that if I've started a program that allows file sharing to select "Permit" to allow the program to continue. But when I select "Permit" the AntiVirus Security Alert will disappear only for a moment and then reappears again. I've tried to solve the problem myself with no luck, and have begun to ignore it by moving it off to the side of the screen so that it does not interfere with what I'm doing (no matter what it is always on top). However, I'm afraid that by simply ignoring the problem that it may/is preventing me from uploading. I can still download, however.

Does anybody have any ideas about how to solve the problem?

Thanks

sounds like you are permitting it for one instance..... you need to click permit and don't ask this question again. so it doesn't come back. I don't know the specifics of Norton because I don't use it but that is the basics of how firewalls work. There should be a list of programs that have permission to go through firewall... access that and check that it is always allowed.

Re: Bit Torrent/Norton AntiVirus alert problem

Thanks for the response.

The message comes back whether I select and click permit or whether I select and click block. No matter my choice, Norton keeps sending the Alert. I realize I'm firewalled, but I've made an exeption for BitTorrent, so I do not understand why the message appears at all.

I think I'll e-mail Norton and/or BitTorrent to see if they have a clue; I sure don't.

re read my post above..... you are temporarily allowing it access. Each time it attempts you are getting a warning. You need to permanently allow the torrent client your are using permission. It has been at least 5 years since I've used a norton product..... but If I remember correctly you click on the firewall settings area. then configure.... then theres a tab that lists program permissions.... scroll down to find your torrent client and check permit always.

the permit thing doesn't matter because norton is a pos and doesn't care if you permitted it or not.

you need to disable "worm protection" in the options. I'm not sure where it's buried, but google or just going through them should find it.

bittorrent generates alot of outgoing connections, and norton inerprets this as your computer having a virus and sending out spam.

If you go into the list of programs that are permitted by Norton and delete BT from the list and then the next time you see that message permit it, the message will stop. Every time you upgrade the program you will have to do this process: delete permission and then re-add.

Sorry, I can't remember specifically where to fix this permission problem. I stopped using NAV.

I been using NAV for 10+ years and have the latest version installed. Never had an issue setting up permissions for BT clients...

I'm not sure if this will work for it as I dont like norton at all (causes more trouble then it stops), but you might be able to let through anything on the port bittorrent uses in norton.

But I don't recommend using norton at all

Re: Bit Torrent/Norton AntiVirus alert problem

Thanks everybody for all the replies. I'll look into all of them as time permits and let you know how it goes.

Currently, I'm ignoring the Norton alert by moving it off to one corner of the screen as it doesn't seem to be causing any real problem.

Thanks again.
