Question Quality Blank CDs

Just a quick question - what blank CDs are considered good quality? I have searched this topic and found most of the info is about DVDs.

I ask as I have been buying TDK CDs, item code CD-R80PW as they are made in Japan. However, I've recently seen CDs which are TDK but they claim to be made for music, however they are made in Taiwan - their code is CDRXA80. Which one is better, are there better brands or brands to look out for?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks
DS

Re: Quality Blank CDs

i would stay away from anything not made in Japan...personally, i only use Taiyo Yuden's, but have used Fuji [japan], TDK [japan], and Sony's without much problem...

here are a few reputable sellers that have excellent prices on TY's, which are what i would recommend, especially for archiving your collection

I don't know if things have changed but any blank made in Japan is TY. You can get Fugi branded TYs at Best Buy. The 50 pack only. Aaron gave good online sources.

Re: Quality Blank CDs

hey, another really good site for any kind of blank media is american digital (www.am-dig.com). i only use tayio yuden cd's, sometimes real ty's from japan, and sometimes the "hidden" ty's from fuji. if the package of fuji 80 min cd-rs (computer, not the "for music only") says made in japan, they're really tayio yudens. you have to watch though, cause the ones in the same blue wrapper that say made in tawian are crap. they're is a cool little free program on the web called cdIdentifer that will tell you who really made any disc, cd or dvd and what kind of dye is was made with, etc... sometimes other companies use TY also, but it's hit & miss. i get the fujis at best buy for about $20 for a 50 spindle. i also recently saw 30 packs of them in my local eckard drugstore for $10-12. i haven't found any "hidden" brand discs in dvd's yet from any local stores. does anyone know of any?

Re: Quality Blank CDs

Well the TDKs I buy are made in Japan so they are probably TYs then. I'll try and find the CD identifier programme and work it out. I prefer to buy from a physical shop so I normally buy from Officeworks or JB HiFi in Melbourne. Sounds like I should continue to buy the ones I'm getting. Since I like the jewel case I buy them in boxes of 10 with a proper jewel case.

Thanks for the help.

No I think actually some of the Jap made Sony DVDs are actually made by Sony, the 16x or something not the 8x + (those are YUDEN02 & the bomb)

In general though you're right, 9 times out of 10 Jap made media is TY. I heard Riteks, which are a little cheaper, are good to though. Their cds, not dvd

Re: Quality Blank CDs

I've been using Sony for the past few years. I get spindles of 100 and I have used them without problems. Some (usually older) drives "prefer" certain types, and thus there many be a brand that works best for you.

Sony works great for me (and my 5 year old drive).

Peace,
Horace

Re: Quality Blank CDs

All the Maxell *Pro* CDs (not the regular ones) that I've seen are Japanese TY with a special thick coating on the label side. On my last visit to Staples I saw Japanese-made Sony *music* discs; the data ones were from Taiwan. Sticking with Japanese-made discs is the rule I follow, and I don't think I've burned two coasters out of the last 500 discs.

Re: Quality Blank CDs

I've seen the Verbatim Vinyl CDRs and they have a certain attraction for an old vinyl-head like me but I haven't bought them as they are Made in Taiwan.
