Bad Media?!

I always get my media from supermediastore.com, and usually get RiData DVD+R's.

I ordered a spindle a couple weeks ago, went through that, and just got another one in yesterday. But as i tried to burn with this new spindle, everyone of them coasts. So I went out to the store today and bought some cheap ass DVD+R's and they are working fine on the same burner/same files.

Did I get some tainted media?

Re: Bad Media?!

I've heard of people getting bad media before. You might try some from the bottom of the spindle to see if it's the whole spindle that is bad.

that sucks...i buy from them alot as well, including ritek's, which i've never had a problem with...i've heard of a few others this has happened to...bad spindle--but see if supermediastore has anything to say re: it [3 outta 100 is plain weak!] maybe a store credit or something...other than that, all i can think of is buy TY DVDrs next time

Re: Bad Media?!

kinda on the same topic here....

just bought yet another DVD burner and it's been a while since I was in the loop as far as the best media. Back when I was a snailmail king I used exclusivly maxell, fuji, or verbatium. To this day I haven't had one that I had burned on one of the above media go bad....

so, heres my question for all you Guru's... are the above mentioned disc's still the bomb, or is there a newer, tested (possibly cheaper), and verified media out there?

I see ritek mentioned a few times, and I'm seeing it a lot more than I'm used to in the stores too. But has anyone had these for a long period of time and can verify they still play like the day they were burned (ie...6 months - year) ?

Thanks for any replys... and sorry for the long mini book there (I'm kinda known for them )

Re: Bad Media?!

here's my opinion on this [but i'm a bit of a snob when it comes to this ] --also *everyone* has a different opinion on this one, so keep that in mind...

==> use Taiyo Yuden's for trading...they are the creme-de-creme of media, and have been for years...people complain about price, but you can get them for fairly cheap when buying in bulk [25cents for cdr, 35-40cents dvdr]...i personally feel that longevity/quality/ etc are VERY important when archiving music for future collectors/traders, and these discs are the *only* disc *everyone* will be happy with.

Ritek's are okay [i use them for personal work stuff all the time] but for trading i'd recommend against it...you can get coasters from time to time, and disc-life is still a bit questionable with these...time will tell i guess

re: Maxell, Verbatim, Sony, Fuji, TDK, etc...some people love em, some don't...all depends on yer setup--plus many folks don't update firmware for their hardware, which can lead to problems with media as well...

i feel like the longer a person's into trading, the more they'll see that using TY/high-end media is important, even if it costs em a little more...its also respectful of the artists/tapers, as it lessens the chances of errors entering into the trading pool on a recording, which both have worked hard to provide...plus it makes the snobs happy, and isn't that what tradings all about

Re: Bad Media?!

Yes TY is the way to go - but I think they only do -R/-RW. If your burner is happier with +R/+RW Ritek might be the one to go. Depends on what you prefer. I've problems reading them both and others that have been fine. Really depends what works for your machine IMHO.
