I'd still archive the 48k files even if they are only 16 bit. They won't be much bigger than 44.1 files, and they are the originals that you downloaded (or wherever you got them). The 44.1 versions are necessary for burning an audio CD but they are lossy in the sense that some of the original data was lost during downsampling.

At this stage in the evolution of audio trading people need to start archiving 48k sources whenever they get them, especially if they are 24 bit, but even if they are not. That fits the spirit of lossless trading, and prepares you for the future when the audio CD format will be dead.
