That's certainly strange. To the best of my knowledge dual layer has always been part of the official dvd specs - it is required by official specifications that dvd players and dvd drives read dual layer discs, so a player that doesn't support stamped dual layer discs can't even call itself a dvd player. (note that most if not all movie dvds are dvd-9 discs)

However afaik there are still considerable compatibility issues between dvd players and burned dual layer discs - I guess that's the problem you're having?

You might want to consult http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers when picking a new player.
