Sony HD cameras (and believe that other brands too) do not record in AVI but in MPG4 AVC/H.264 format. The best results you may get with Sony Vegas, and perhaps Canopus ProCoder 3, although the last one is very costly and it's a format converter only.
BTW: forget any conversion on PC if you do not have Dual Core chip and powerful graphic card...
