If you have a data disc with an .avi file on it, a standard DVD Player will not recognize it, unless your player is a DIVX player.

Otherwise your SOL with that.

There are programs that allow you to convert an avi file to dvd format and will then burn to a disc in a format that allows the standard dvd player (or PS3) to recognize it when you put the disc in.

Nero, for one.

That's not true. If he has a dvd player that is NOT Divx, then it won't recognize the disc, as the .avi would be on a DATA disc. At least that's what it seems like the OP is referring to.
