It's too bad that it was bumped-up by a spammer but it's great that this thread did get bumped because I'd never seen it before and it looks like some great info. I don't have time to read it now but I'll give it a thorough read later tonight since this is a subject that I don't know anything about and would like to know more.

In the past all I've done with my recordings (with Audacity) is use Compression on applause or other loud noise spikes and then applied Amplification to everything. Usually I've been happy with that but on some recordings I know that they could be made to sound better but didn't know where to start.
