The Edirol R-09 and R-09HR are not that big.

You should go with CF or SD. Hard drives fail, and HDs in these types of recorders fail more often than one you might have hooked up to your PC.

The HR will do 24/96.

You're not going to get all (or possibly even most) of those requirements in anything smaller.

Most recorders will have plug-in power, but it may or may not be enough to properly power your mics. And if you're going to record louder shows, you'll likely need a battery box.

There's not many smaller recorders. A Hi-MD is tiny, and has great built-in SONY pre-amps, but it's only gonna get you 16/44.1.

Worry less about the size. If you can't sneak in an R-09, battery box, & mics, you need to work on your stealthiness, not find a smaller recorder.
