I've not had this problem, but I use VSO Divx to DVD for .avi conversions. It's damn slow (about 2x for the first conversion, then as slow as -2x for the 3rd or 4th conversioin onto the same DVD), but it does the job well.

It will most likely take you longer to convert and burn than to watch it...

But it's an excellent program. Also, get some more airflow into your case, as this will heat it up a bit. I notice a jump of 15-20 degrees. Ambient room about 67 F, processor temp at about 100 F, during conversion it will jump to as much as 126 F. No worse than during .mp3 conversion, but it sits at the high temp for longer.
