To sum it up. Much like a vinyl Lp of old, store bought DVDs and CDs are pressed. that is, the dots and dashes are pressed into the micro thin metal layer embedded within the plastic.

Burned disks are just that. the same info but burned in, ( I think it is a sort of dye) not pressed. Quality of the burn depends on a variety of factors. The dots and dashes deteriorate over time. Much faster than pressed.
