On the mac I use Logic Pro but I'm not happy with it's wave editor. I'm still looking for a descent (cheap) wave editor for the mac Logic's great for EQing though. If you can find a cheap version of Logic for PC I'd recommend that too.

Good luck
I use Logic Pro 7 as the heart of my sound editing system. It is an outstanding (but expensive!) program for mixing, filtering, equalizing, but as you say, is not designed as a waveform editor. For that I use Amadeus ($30 from http://www.hairersoft.com/) or Peak (http://www.bias-inc.com/). I think Peak is definitely the best, but again it is expensive. I've been using a demo version of Peak 4.1 for almost two years and have "kept it going" by tweaking the date and time settings on my computer (I use a dedicated G5 for all of this). Peak is also great for using the Waves plugins for noise reduction, declicking etc (http://www.waves.com/). I think these are by far the best available for the Mac, and again, many of their products are available as free demos.
