Hi Ellen, welcome to the site!

I'll let some PC users answer your specific questions (I'm a Mac user), but I did want to say that the software links we have in our FAQ are to the software websites themselves and I haven't heard anyone complain about getting viruses from them, so I think you don't need to worry about that.
