I would suggest dbPowerAmp to encode.
My question is how many concerts are you putting on your iPod? If you're only putting one or two, then just burn them to a CD and listen to them on a cheap CD player. I would stick to just putting albums or misc. songs on it. I'm assuming you already own or download the band who's concert you're putting on you're iPod. I don't have that big of a problem with mp3s. Their useful for albums, and samples. That's about it.
