If the question is pulling shows off the Tivo unit -- the TivoDesktop software would be the first thing to try. Unfortunately you get DRM encumbered .tivo files from that process. It is basically mpeg-2 with extra headers so you can manipulate the files with a little work.

Hacked tivo units can serve non-encrypted video. Tons of pointers on this on the net.

Caveat: I've only experimented with a non-HD tivo unit, I don't know what is supported for HD units.

Regardless, you're in the same boat at that point as the other posters mentioned in that the current dvd-video format doesn't support HD.
