i usually use
ffmpegx, which is a video/audio encoder & converter...but it'll also tell you the specs on a file
but as they said above, if you ripped a cd using EAC [PC] or xACT [Mac], then the files will undoubtedly be 16bit 44.1kHz wav/aiff files
