acceptable formats for surround sound

I need some clarification on what file formats are acceptable for surround sound audio. I may be doing some decoding of some matrixed live broadcasts in the upcoming months, and at present only have the ability to generate DTS-CD files. Just uploaded my first project to the Genesis movement site, and while they were cool with the cd format, it does seem to be a little bit of a grey area.
Also, regarding acceptable sources of these projects, are extractions of lossy sources acceptable? I figured not, however, there is a certain website that streams old live tapes which has a significant amount of matrixed sources online, and doesn't seem to have any interest in offering them in their intended form. Some test extractions sound much better than expected. I'll leave it at that. If that's something you don't want to get in, I understand.
Thanks, CP
