well for one thing waiting for everything to convert to compressed audio takes a lot of extra time, especially when all you want to do is listen to some lossless files you downloaded.

I used to go to school with a walkman and a couple cassettes in my pocket... usuing lossless on an 80GB iPod I've got over 100 albums worth right in my pocket. I don't feel the need to squash everything to death to create a playlist with 1,000,000 albums to put on random... maybe its generational? (altho I think I'm about the same age as you )
