Which torrent is the material from ? It sounds like it's not downloaded properly or the authoring is duff if it displays the same problems with VLC and DVD Player.
You could try opening the first large VOB with
MPEG Streamclip. It will ask you if you want to open as a DVD etc. If it still chokes try telling Streamclip not to open as a DVD but to open all the VOBs in the set as one (let it fix timebreaks). If that gives a functioning video you can save as MPEG-2 (no transcoding) and re-author it yo'self.
