This could well be LP4. I'm in the process of preparing some MD frequency/spectral screenshots using white noise so that they can be compared easily to mp3. Should have them up next week after I've finished my exams. In the mean time - listen to it carefully on headphones and see if you can spot audible stereo artifacts. LP4 can often have quite a dramatic noise-gate effect on quiet parts, dropping all the way to silence briefly.
However, if it is LP4 then it's gonna be sounding pretty bad anyway. I taped something like that accidentally once and it really killed it. Thankfully it was the audience recording of a show where I was also getting a nice SP soundboard feed
