I usually make a disc image (iso) to my hard drive and then burn that. It seems the most straight forward way for me. However, if I'm putting a DVD on my drive to torrent, I make an md5 checksum of the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD, then copy the VIDEO_TS folder to my hard drive and then run the md5 checksum against the copied contents. I think there is an application called DVD Decrytor for PCs to copy the contents of a VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive (I'm not sure of the name since I'm on a Mac and there isn't something similar).
