In Word, press CTRL-H.

For instance, I might original write a story of a character with a placeholder of <characterA>

I will write a biography (to help keep track of everything) of <characterA> later in the document, but when I want to finalize the character's name as <John>, is there a way for it to automatically sort itself in alphabetical order, at the same time as changing all references of <characterA> to <John> within the context of the story? Without too much work?
